In The Lovely Bones, Susie's journey is like she's in between both worlds. She's still in the real world with her family and friends, but at the same time moving on through heaven. Susie saw her father asking people if they saw the girl in the picture he was holding; she hadn't come home from school as yet and has been missing for a few hours, but she also saw a bright light shining in front of her calling her to come forwards. "On my way out of earth, I touched a girl named Ruth. She went to my school but we'd never been close. She was standing in my path that night when my soul shrieked out of earth." Susie explained. Since then, Ruth shares a connection with Susie's soul that no one else has. Susie continues to lead her parents and the detectives to her murderer, but with the help of Ruth as well.
Throughout the story, Susie's sister Lindsey suspects that Mr. Harvey, the next door neighbor is the murderer. One morning Lindsey stayed at the back of the pack of running boys when she saw Mr. Harvey leave his house. She started walking instead, squeezing her side, faking a cramp. "With one more lap, you boys can go on without me." Lindsey had stopped right in front of Mr. Harvey's home. She then broke inside to find any clues that might lead to solving the mystery about her sister's death.
While Lindsey was busy doing her own little thing, so was her family, answering so many questions and phone calls. Susie was there every step of the way, keeping an eye on what was happening back at home. Susie was confused in what to do or where to go. She was now getting used to being in a whole new world. For being a young child, at times it was tough but she still looked back at old memories with her family and thought that there was a purpose for this all to happen. She knew that she was meant to be in heaven now.
